InthemorerollingsectionsoftheEast,springrunoffwasformerlyabsorbedandheldtemporarilyintheporoussoilsbeneaththeunbrokenexpanseofforest.Whenlargeareaswereconvertedtofarmuse,removaloftheforestandthepracticeofup-and-downhillplowingdeprivedthesoilsofmuchoftheirabilitytocatchandstorewater.
