InthemorerollingsectionsoftheEast,springrunoffwasformerlyabsorbedandheldtemporarilyintheporoussoilsbeneaththeunbrokenexpanseofforest.Whenlargeareaswereconvertedtofarmuse,removaloftheforestandthepracticeofup-and-downhillplowingdeprivedthesoilsofmuchoftheirabilitytocatchandstorewater.
Theeffectsofeliminatingthenaturalforestcoverareshowninthegulliedfarmlandsandwidenedstreamchannelsfoundinsomedenselysettledareas.Partlybecausethestreamchannelsaremoreorlessfilledwithmaterialwasheddownfromtheuplands,andpartlybecausestormrunoffhasincreased,thechannelsaretodaynolongerabletocarryalltheflowfromheavyrains.Thisexplainswhythestreamsovertopbanksfarmoreoftenthaninthedaysbeforesettlement.
