PeaceCorpsvoulunteerslikethisinTirana,Albaniawillhelpimplementtheprograminmanycountries.

Thesevolunteersworkmostlyinremoteareas,theirinitiativesincludeprogramstopromotegenderequalityandempoweryoungwomen,saysvolunteerMaryQuandt.

“Itisaboutstartingadialogueandincreasingexpectationsofthesegirls;letthemknowthattheycanachievethisandtheycangrowintheirsenseofselfandtheircapabilitiesofleadershipandexperienceandassoonasyouplantthatseedinthem,theyaregoingtonurtureitandit'sgoingtogrow.”

USAID'sSusanMarkhampointsoutthateducatinggirlsbenefitstheentiresociety.

“Womenwhostayinschool,younggirlswhostayinschooltillwomanhood,arelikelytobehealthier.

Theyaremorelikelytogetmarriedlater,bearchildrenlaterandtheyaremorelikelytokeeptheirownkidsinschoolforlonger.Soithasagreatrippleeffectacrossthewholecommunity.”
