Thelensdesignerhasoneenormousadvantageoverthechessplayer:thedesignerisfreetocallonanyavailablesourceofhelptoguidehimthroughthestaggeringnumberofpossibilities.Mostofthathelponcecamefrommathematicsandphysics,butrecentlycomputertechnology,informationtheory,chemistry,industrialengineeringandpsychophysicshaveallcontributedtomakingthelensdesigner'sjobimmeasurablymoreproductive.Someofthelensesonthemarkettodaywereinconceivableadecadeago.Otherswhosedesignisasmuchasacenturyoldcannowbemassproducedatlowcost.Withthedevelopmentofautomaticproductionmethods,lensesaremadebythemillions,bothoutofglassandoutofplastics.Today'slensesarebetterthanthebestlensesusedbythegreatphotographersofthepast.Moreover,theirpricemaylower,inspiteofthefactthat19thcenturycraftsmenworkedforonlyafewdollarsaweekandtoday'slensesaremorecomplex.Thelensdesignercannotfailtobegratefulforthescienceandtechnologythathavemadehisworkeasierandhiscreationsmorewidelyavailable,butheisalsohumbled:itisnolongerpracticalforafinephotographiclenstobedesignedfrombeginningtoendbyasinglehumanmind.
