MigrantsintheJunglefacedseveresecurityandhealthproblems,suchasscabiesandtuberculosis,accordingtoastudyin2015.Awatersourcewasalsopollutedwithdeadlybacteria.
LeighDaynes,directorofcharitygroupDoctorsoftheWorld,toldTheGuardiannewspaperthatCalaiswasa“humanitarianemergency.”Theresidentswerealreadyhungry,hesaid.ButtheirsufferingwasmadeworsebecauseoftheirunsafeanddifficulttripstoreachFrance.
Hollandesaidhiscountryshouldnotacceptthecampsbecausetheyare“notworthyofFrance.”Theyarenotalong-termanswerformigrantsandrefugees,hesaid.

PhilippeWattieristhedirectoroftheSalvationArmyofficeinReims.HesaidthatanumberofmigrantshaveapoorimageofFrancebecausemanypeople,includingpolice,havemistreatedthem.
Sometimes,therearethreatsofviolenceagainstmigrants.AlettertotheSalvationArmylastweekthreatenedtoburndownthebuildingswheremigrantsarestaying.
