"IjusthadtheopportunitytohaveanexcellentconversationwithPresident-electTrump,”Obamasaid.“Itwaswide-ranging.WetalkedaboutsomeoftheorganizationalissuesinsettinguptheWhiteHouse;wetalkedaboutforeignpolicy,wetalkedaboutdomesticpolicy,and,asIsaidlastnight,mynumberonepriorityinthecomingtwomonthsistotrytofacilitateatransitionthatinsuresourpresident-electissuccessful."

Trumptoldreportersthemeetingwassupposedtolastabouttenminutesbutlasted90,anditcouldhavegoneonevenlonger.

"Ilookforwardtodealingwiththepresidentinthefuture,includingcounsel,"hesaid."Heexplainedsomeofthedifficultiesandthehigh-flyingassetsandsomeofthewonderfulthingsthathavebeenachieved.Mr.President,itwaswonderfulmeetingwithyouandIlookforwardtomeetingwithyoumanymoretimesinthefuture."

TheWhiteHousesaidObamaofficialsaremakingsurethatTrumpandhisyet-to-be-namedkeyofficialsare"preparedfromdayonetoprotectournationalsecurity."U.S.intelligenceanddefenseofficialsarestartingtogiveTrumpdailybriefingsonthreatstothecountry'ssecurityandoverseasmilitaryoperations.

Inaddition,theObamaadministrationplanstohosttwoexercisesinvolvingseveralgovernmentagenciestohelpfamiliarizeTrumpofficialswithhowthegovernmentrespondstodomesticemergencies,whetherterroristattacksorsuchnaturaldisastersasviolenttornadoesandhurricanes.

Lessawkward'thanexpected

Afterthemeeting,WhiteHousePressSecretaryJoshEarnestwasaskedifthemeetingwasawkward.

"Themeetingmighthavebeenalittlelessawkwardthansomemighthaveexpected,"hesaid.

Trumpsaiditwasthefirsttimethetwomenhavemetpersonally.

ThepresidentcampaignedexceptionallyhardforhisformersecretaryofstateandfellowDemocratHillaryClinton.ObamaoftenderidedTrump,theblunt-spokenrealestatemogulwhohasneverheldelectedoffice,asunfittoleadthecountry.

Meanwhile,TrumpforyearsquestionedwhetherObamawasbornintheU.S.beforerecentlyacknowledginghiscitizenship.HesaysheplanstounderminekeyObamapolicies,includingthehealthcarereforms,environmentalregulations,protectionofsomeimmigrantsfromdeportation,andtheIrannucleardeal.

Rootingforsuccess

Despitethebittercampaign,ObamapledgedWednesdaytocooperatewithTrump'stakeover.

"Itisnosecretthatthepresident-electandIhavesomeprettysignificantdifferences,"Obamasaid."Butremember,eightyearsago,President[GeorgeW.]BushandIhadsomeprettysignificantdifferences.ButPresidentBush'steamcouldnothavebeenmoreprofessionalormoregraciousinmakingsurewehadasmoothtransition."

ObamasaidheisrootingforTrump'ssuccessandhasorderedtheWhiteHouseteam"toworkashardaswecantomakesurethatthisisasuccessfultransitionforthepresident-elect."

SecretaryofStateJohnKerrycitedthetraditionofpeacefulchangesinleadershipashecongratulatedTrumponThursdayandwishedhimwellforthe"enormouschallengesthathewillundertake."

"Withatransitionlikethis,theissuesthatwefacedon'tgoaway,"KerrysaidduringavisittoNewZealand."Thevalueswithwhichwefacethemarethesamevaluesthedayaftertheelectionthattheywerethedaybefore."

MeetingwithCongressionalleaders

WhileinWashington,TrumpalsometwithHouseofRepresentativesSpeakerPaulRyanandSenateMajorityLeaderMitchMcConnell,leadersoftheRepublicanmajoritiesineachchamber,abouttheirlegislativeplans.BothgavetepidsupporttoTrumpduringtheelection,buthavevowedtoworkinconcertwithhimtopasstheparty'sagenda.

ThemostprominentRepublicaneffortwillbetounwindandreplacetheAffordableCareAct,theoutgoingpresident'shealthcareprogram,knownasObamacare,thathelped20millionpeoplegethealthinsurance.
