Usingafederaldatabasethatincludeddatafromroughly1,000hospitals,Deshmukhfound6,229casesofbrokenheartsyndromein2007.Ofthose,only671—justunder11%—wereinmen.Hefoundthat,overall,womenhadabout7.5timestheriskofbrokenheartsyndromeasmen;inpeopleunder55,womenwereat9.5timesgreaterriskthanmen.Womenover55werealsothreetimesmorelikelytosufferbrokenheartsyndromethanyoungerwomen.
Researchersdon'tknowwhatcausesthegenderdisparity,buttheyhavesomeideas.ReportedtheAP:
