The Acts and the Common Law(Para 7)
The Common Law reflects court judgements through ages. It was actually a judge made law based on the various local customs of the Anglo-Saxons in dealing with offences.
The judges made their decisions by relying on the verdicts made by a circuit court in similar cases. These verdicts were known as “precedents” , which became the basis of English “Common Law”.
The story between Henry II and Thomas Becket reflects the conflict between the King and the Church. ry.
Henry II enforced the rule of law in England and he tried to reform church courts by making them be subject to secular laws (the Common Law). Though he failed, it was a nice try.
