Oneofthenicethingsaboutsurrenderingtothefactthatlifeisn’tfairisthatitkeepsusfromfeelingsorryforourselvesbyencouragingustodotheverybestwecanwithwhatwehave.Weknowit’snot“life’sjob”tomakeeverythingperfect:it’sourownchallenge.Surrenderingtothisfactalsokeepsusfromfeelingsorryforothersbecauseweareremindedthateveryoneisdealtadifferenthand;everyonehasuniquestrengthsandproblemsintheprocessofgrowingup,facingtherealityandmakingdecisions;andeveryonehasthosetimesthattheyfeelunfairlytreated.

Thefactthatlifeisn’tfairdoesn’tmeanweshouldn’tdoeverythinginourpowertoimproveourownlivesortheworldasawhole.Tothecontrary,itsuggeststhatweshould.Whenwedon’trecognizeoradmitthatlifeisn’tfair,wetendtofeelpityforothersandforourselves.Pity,ofcourse,isaself-defeatingemotionthatdoesnothingforanyone,excepttomakeeveryonefeelworsethantheyalreadydo.Whenwedorecognizethatlifeisn’tfair,however,wefeelcompassionforothersandforourselves.Andcompassionisaheartfeltemotionthatdeliversloving-kindnesstoeveryoneittouches.Thenexttimeyoufindyourselfthinkingabouttheinjusticesoftheworld,tryremindingyourselfofthisverybasicfact.Youmaybesurprisedthatitcanmakeyououtofself-pityandintohelpfulaction.
