Incidentsquotedincludedafatalstabbingandshootingoutsideahallofresidence,thepetrol-bombingofcarsnearanotherresidence,andtworacistattacks.Ninepercentofwomenandsevenpercentofmenratedsecurityasunsatisfactoryintheareawheretheylived.Thesurveyconfirmedheadteachers’fearsaboutcontactbetweenstudentsandtutorsslipping,withaquarterofthestudentsseeingtheirtutoronlyeverythreeweeks.

Newstudents,usedtoregularcontactwiththeirteachers,foundithardtoadapttothechange.Interviewtechniqueswereacauseforconcern,iththeschoolcallingformoretrainingoftheuniversitystaffinvolvedinadmissions.Someheadmasterscomplainedthatinterviewereincreasingly“eccentric”.Onegreetedanapplicantbythrowinghimanapple.

Anotherinterviewlastedonlythreeminutes.Aboutaquarterofthestudentsfoundtheworkloadatuniversityheavierthantheyhadexpected.Thereweredifferencesbetweensubjects,witharchitecture,engineering,veterinaryscience,medicineandsomesciencesubjectsdemandingthemostwork.Thesurveyalsoconfirmedpreviousconcernsaboutpossibleracialbiasinadmissionstomedicalcourses.Applicantswithnamessuggestinganethnicminoritybackgroundhadbeenrejectedbywhitecandidateswiththesamequalifications.
