Fromaveryyoungagechildrenareimbuedwiththeoldvaluesandattitudes,includingrespectfortheireldersandafeelingofresponsibilitytothefamily.Thishelpstoexplainwhythereissolittlejuveniledelinquencyamongthem.ThehighregardforeducationwhichisdeeplyrootedinChineseculture,andthewillingnesstoworkveryhardtogainadvancement,areothernoteworthycharacteristicsoftheirs.Thisexplainswhysomanydescendantsofuneducatedlaborershavesucceededinbecomingdoctors,lawyers,andotherprofessionals.

ChineseAmericansmakeuponlyatinyfractionofourpopulation;therearefewerthanhalfamillion,livingchieflyinCalifornia,NewYork,andHawaii.AsAmericanattitudestowardminoritiesandtowardethnicdifferenceshavechangedinrecentyears,thelong-reviledChinesehavegainedwideacceptance.Today,theyaregenerallyadmiredfortheirmanyremarkablecharacteristics,andareoftenheldupasanexampleworthfollowing.Andtheirnumerouscontributionstotheiradoptedlandaremuchappreciated.
