Whathaschangedmorethanmarriageisthenuclearfamily.Twenty-fiveyearsago,thetypicalAmericanfamilyconsistedofthehusband,thewife,andtwoorthreechildren.Now,therearemanymarriagesinwhichcoupleshavedecidednottohaveanychildren,andtherearemanymarriageswhereatleastsomeofthechildrenarefromthewife’spreviousmarriage,orthehusband’s,orboth.Sometimesthesechildrenspendalloftheirtimewithoneparentfromtheformermarriage;sometimestheyaresharedbetweenthetwoformerspouses.

Thus,onecanfindeverytypeoftamelyarrangement.Therearemarriageswithoutchildren;marriageswithchildrenfromonlythepresentmarriages;marriageswith“full-time”childrenfromboththepresentandformermarriages;marriageswith“full-time”childrenfromthepresentmarriageand“part-time”childrenfromformermarriages.Therearestepfathers,stepmothers,half-brothersandhalf-sisters.Itisnotallthatunusualforachildtohavefourparentsandeightgrandparents!Theseareenormouschangesfromthetraditionalnuclearfamily.Butevenso,eveninthemidstofallthis,thereremainsoneconstant:mostAmericansspendmostoftheiradultlivesmarried.
