Expressions of ability or inability to do something

able to do, unable to do, fail to do, can do, no problem, as easy as ABC, a piece of cake, make it, have what it takes to , over my head , beyond me , too much for (me)

Have what it takes to: possess the necessary skills, talent, aptitude to succeed Do you have what it takes to become a doctor?

A piece of cake: We need not have worried about the math exam. It was a piece of cake.

Over one’s mind: not capable of understanding or comprehending e.g. Physics was always over my head.

Expressions for giving reasons

due to, because (of), in (the) light of the fact that, thanks to, on account of, by reasons of, as a result of, owing to, for the sake of, to that end

In light of the fact that: because of or due to some condition or reality e.g. In light of the fact that she is so ill, we will not make her come to the work.

On account of: because of or due to some condition or reality e.g. On account of his height, he will never be a professional basketball player.

Expression of wanting and hoping

hope to, expect, desire to, look forward to, dream of, wait up for, long for, thirst after , aspire to(for), watch for, be in prospect

Thirst after: be hungry for, to want something badly e.g. He thirsted after fame and riches.

Be in prospect: A rich harvest is in prospect.

Expressions of disappointment

much to my disappointment, I don't know why, rude awakening, it saddens me to, what a let-down, how could you...?, dashed hopes, fall short of, not up to expectation

rude awakening: abrupt, sudden, startling awareness of something disappointing and unpleasant I had a rude awakening when I found myself on the verge of bankruptcy. Her husband’s extramarital affair was a rude awakening.

dashed hopes: The disappointment of imperfection and dashed hopes can be the worst kind, particularly when your expectations were set inappropriately high.

Fall short of: fail to satisfy, as of expectations, for example Our achievements always fall short of our aspirations and expectations. 

not up to expectation: 1) His new book did not come up to expectation. 2) Your training has not come up to our expectation, we hope you will train harder.

Expressions of frustration / being caught in a difficult situation

can't make up one's mind, be caught in a trap, be baffled, be cornered, be checkmated, back to the wall, in a hole , in deep water , at wit's end, be fed up. Enough is enough! It's a handful!5 What a pain! What a load to carry! Will this ever end? I can’t stand it anymore!

Be baffled: be confused or perplexed When I heard that, I was very baffled. Today, the aftertaste is simply infinite (memorable).

Afflict: (usu. Passive) suffer from   e.g. She is afflicted with (i.e suffers from) arthritis. Afflict sb/sth (with sth):  cause trouble, pain  or distress to sb/sth 

Assure: to make certain; verify Assure sb. of sth. e.g. I can assure you of the reliability of the information.

Forestall: to prevent from occurring; to anticipate e.g., I have my objection all prepared, but Stephens forestalls me.
